Chapter Seven: Closing Thoughts: Why Families Can Trust Paul Hyl & Arthur Conte To Guide Them Through The Probate Process

The Value Of Preparedness And Quality Legal Help

Working with an experienced guide can make an enormous difference when navigating the probate process, and at Hyl Conte Law, PLLC we’ve seen firsthand how much smoother things go when clients understand what to expect from the start.

What You Need To Know Before Starting Probate

Probate takes time, likely longer than you’ll expect. That’s why patience is essential. Nothing moves as quickly or as smoothly as you think it should, and the process is far more rigid and procedural than most people realize. Even if the will clearly states what the decedent wanted, you can’t simply act on it immediately or independently. Every major decision should be discussed with an attorney, accountant, or other professional.

There are steps that may feel archaic or unnecessarily slow, but the system is what it is. Attorneys don’t control the court’s pace, the laws, or the clerks reviewing paperwork. If you understand this from the outset and trust the guidance you’ve received, you’ll likely have a far less stressful experience. Patience with the process and with the professionals guiding you is key.

Our Approach: Different From Other Firms

At Hyl Conte Law, PLLC the difference isn’t just in how we handle probate; it’s in how we approach all client relationships. We emphasize:

  • Compassion and empathy
  • Clear explanations in plain English
  • Responsiveness and accessibility
  • A personal touch designed to make you feel supported

Our clients often become like family, and that isn’t a slogan… it’s the reality of how we work. Probate is rarely just a legal process; it’s a deeply personal experience wrapped in grief, stress, and uncertainty. That’s why we make it a priority to be genuinely present for the people we serve.

We return calls and emails promptly because we know that waiting in silence only amplifies worry. We take the time to explain every step in plain, understandable language, weaving patience and a bit of humor into moments that might otherwise feel heavy.

And while we handle the legal and financial responsibilities with precision, we never lose sight of the emotional weight clients are carrying. Whether someone is drowning in paperwork, navigating complicated family dynamics, or simply struggling with the loss of a loved one, we meet them with empathy and stability.

We approach every case with the mindset that people come first and the law comes second because no amount of technical skill matters if clients don’t feel heard, supported, and cared for. That human-centered approach is something clients consistently value, and it’s why so many of them remain part of our lives long after their cases are closed.

Achieving Success For Our Clients

Success is when clients feel a sense of relief, when the weight they walked in with slowly lifts over time. Ideally, that feeling starts at the first meeting, when the attorneys lay out a clear path and clients begin to realize they aren’t facing this alone.

Throughout the process, we aim for our clients to feel like the next step is visible, even if the overall journey is long. They shouldn’t feel excessively uncertain or lost. And when probate finally wraps up, we hope that our client can come to us and say, That wasn’t so bad after all! I’m grateful I had you to guide me. I couldn’t have done it this way without you.

That sense of clarity, comfort, and confidence—that’s the definition of success.

Guiding Families To Positive Outcomes

Some of the most meaningful work during probate happens behind the scenes—quietly, carefully, and often in the middle of tense family dynamics. One case that stands out involved three siblings who were barely speaking after their father’s death. The sibling who lived closest to their father had rushed to empty the family home and move everything into a storage unit—baseball cards, jewelry, photo albums, even old letters. The two out-of-state siblings were furious and felt excluded, and with three attorneys involved, every conversation seemed one step away from exploding.

It took patience, structure, and a great deal of coordination, but the attorneys eventually brokered a resolution that felt fair to everyone. Each sibling received items that mattered most to them, and, perhaps more importantly, no lasting damage was done to their relationships. In situations like these, preserving the family rather than winning is often the most significant victory.

Another case presented an entirely different kind of challenge: a wealthy woman passed away without any estate planning, leaving behind a husband and five children. Because New York law directs half of an unplanned estate to the spouse and half to the children, the family was suddenly facing an enormous estate tax burden. Only assets passing to a spouse are exempt, and without intervention, the estate was headed toward an avoidable tax bill of $15–20 million.

The solution required creativity and precision. The children could disclaim their inheritances, allowing everything to pass to their father tax-free, but one child was a minor and legally unable to disclaim. The attorneys petitioned the court to authorize the father to act on the child’s behalf, and the family navigated the entire process within the nine-month deadline. The result preserved the family’s wealth for future generations, even though the children gave up immediate inheritances they would ultimately receive later.
